 HAY FORECAST

UPDATE - 17th July

Barley Hay is on the ground and drying, taking advantage of the chilly winds we currently have to ensure good dry hay. At this time, our first bales should be in farm sheds this weekend and we hope to collect some next Tuesday. Pricing is not agreed yet but due to overall shortages of feed the demand is extremely high and we are projecting over $25 / bale. Our Barley Hay is all 'beardless' and suitable for use with Guinea Pigs.

We are quickly getting through our supply of late season Grassy Hay and it will not last much longer. We continue to look for alternate sources but there is not much out there.

Lucerne Hay is in short supply due to low water levels in many areas and irrigation restrictions in key Lucerne growing acreage, especially in the upper Lockyer Valley. Prices have so far held but we would not be surprised to see upward pressure soon.

GRASSY ROUND  BALES

We have secured a supply of Grassy Round Bales but due to the limited numbers available we are restricting customers to 2 bales unless a new source can be found. The price reflects the shortages - $170 / 4ft x 4ft bale.

Chaff Prices

Contrary to first indications, we now face increases in winter chaff prices due to continuing shortages, particularly of Oaten and Wheaten hay to chaff, but aslo the diminishing supply of local Lucerne. New pricing will hit the shop in about a week once current stock is replaced by the new higher priced product.

Prime Lucerne Chaff in Hessian Sacks

It is will some regret that we can no longer source hessian sacks of any quality and recent bags have been so weak that they have been prone to splitting. We have therefore taken the decision to  migrate to poly-woven sacks as used by most stockists. The new sacks are gusseted so are thicker and not quite as long but contain the same (30Kg) quantity of chaff.

Note: We have not changed our chaff supplier and only the bag has changed.

We source all our hay from local farmers with whom we have established long relationships. We collect direct from the farm several times per week and our aim is maintain a reliable stock of fresh feed all year, even when supply is short.

Our chaff is locally cut and bagged specifically for Brendale Produce using high temperature steam treatment to maintain freshness, ensuring it is always to our standards.

We primarily stock several grades of lucerne as well as grassy and barley hay in standard square, small round and large round bales. The table below shows bale types currently supplied by farmers in our region. Actual availability is seasonal.
